Jelle Barentsz

Jelle Barentsz – Professor of Radiology and Chairman of the Prostate MR Center of Excellence of the Radboud University Nijmegen Medical Center, The Netherlands.

He received the Koningin Wilhelmina Onderzoeksprijs (2008), the Wertheim Salomonson Medal of the Dutch Society of Radiology (2011), the Lifetime Achievement Award of the Society of Uroradiogy, the SCBT & MR Lauterbur Award (1999, 2010),  SCBT & MR Cum Laude Awards (2004, 2008), six First Price awards (1994, 1998, 2001, 2002, 2006, 2007) from the Society of Uroradiology. It’s clear that excellence can be considered as one of Jelle Barentsz’ close friends.

This friendship started in 1980 when Barentsz received his medical degree (Cum Laude) from the University of Utrecht. Ten years later his research on MR imaging of the Urinary Bladder earned him his PhD. Soon numerous peer reviewed publications and presentations at international meetings followed, making him a well-known expert and wanted speaker in MR imaging of urogenital and pelvic diseases.

Excellence also accompanies him during his organizational adventures. For example he is Founding Member and Past President of the International Cancer Imaging Society, President of the European Society of Urogenital Radiology from 2002-2004 and Chairman of the Scientific Exhibits Committee of the European Congress of Radiology from 1999-2002. Currently he is Professor of Radiology and Chair of the Prostate MR-Center of Excellence of the Radboud University Nijmegen Medical Center, The Netherlands. This MR-Center is visited by men from all over the World, seeing more than 2000 patients every year for advanced prostate MR-diagnosis.

His daily work at the MR-Center of Excellence consists of warfare. His main enemy, prostate cancer, can be typified as hard and painful to trace. In the war against it, Barentsz is one of the people who doesn’t shoot with heavy artillery. Instead of blindly aiming with a cannon at a tumor the size of a fly, Barentsz chooses to shoot with a teleprecision gun, called advanced MRI. By doing so a precise and accurate diagnose of a tumor can be made simple and fast with subsequent minimal invasive therapies and effects. Making clear that the value of patient care remains central within Barentsz’ work. It’s his ambition to treat prostate cancer effective with minimal side  effects.

He makes full advantage of modern diagnostic and communication techniques. By using these he is establishing an e-network of top-expertise in diagnosis and treatment of prostate cancer with his Center of Excellence in Nijmegen in the middle.

During his talk he will convince you of the importance of his warfare and why the innovative use of MRI and tele-connection should be a worldwide standard in the treatment of prostate cancer. He will show how this will lead to a fast top-expert diagnosis for every man no matter where he is living in the world.
